Ballistic barra
08 Oct 2009Hold onto your hats folks, the next strike you get might just blow your mind...
There's been some BIG barra action recently with reports coming from almost every corner of our saltwater haunts. I for one can confess to an electric barra session this week and by all reports, I wasn't the only one.
A glance at tide times was enough to convince me of yet another trip to the mouth of The Adelaide and my initial haunt was at The Narrows. Troll, troll, troll and not much happened other than a rogue 75cm fish that struck right at the edge of the rock point. A little disappointed, I called it a day and headed toward the ramp thinking I'd been slightly defeated. As I entered Saltwater Arm, the clarity of that deep greeny blue water reeled me in and I couldn't help but pull up for another troll. I re-rigged and sent back the Green Bling 160 Classic and my mate Brad opted for the "Spotted Dog" 120.
Twenty metres in I got slammed and peeled into the sticks before I had time to think about more drag!
I gave the fish a little slack hoping things would go my way, and they did -.91cm of chrome bumper, thankyou very much. The following three trolls resulted in three more barra to 81cm, needless to say I no longer felt defeated.

of a slowly trolled Green Bling Bling Classic Barra lure.
Shoal Bay is alive and well with live mullet braining 17 fish, the biggest 110cm, the smallest 78cm for one regular local angler.
To the west, Trevor Robb returned rather impressed with The Finniss River's performance. Finishing the day, a tally of 30 odd barra added to what has been a pretty special week in Barraville.
And it's not like you really need to go that far either; as I've said many times before, October (Rocktober!) owns our harbour barra fishing, proven yet again with a 120cm fish caught by Bev Arthus this week. An image of this fish can be seen pinned on the Got One Brag Board and let me tell you, it's a ripper!
Visiting South Aussie fisho Jason Oster put in the hard yards at The Daly and discovered the spring tides to be the go. Fishing between Wooliana and Browns Creek was good enough to eliminate any lengthy travel and Jason said it was the clearest water on the river.
Looking at the tides, there's monster springs this week. Wednesday will see the low of 0.6 expose plenty of mudflats and that means there will be ample shallow, warm water to chase the elusive barramundi. It's worth noting that the big springs can be of an advantage to us too, with little or even no water in some of our harbour creeks, it ain't hard to work out that the fish are likely to be sitting at the mouth.
As for Shoal Bay, casting the low tide holes is often a winner. Just be sure not to wander too far away from the boat 'cause when that tide turns it sneaks up on you real quick.
Get into it folks. This prime time opportunity will be gone before you know it and we will then be praying for run-off!
