Ballyhoo?

30 Sep 2009

As we near the forthcoming bluewater comp season it's no surprise that there's plenty of "test and tune" trips happening. The neap tides are offering water clarity that the bluewater brigade just can't resist so there's all sorts of weird and wonderful bait rigging techniques being tested to the limit.

The other necessary ingredient for serious beakie action is some sort of teaser and I've seen everything from Coke cans, old compact discs, tins and just about anything flashy used to complete a daisy chain for plenty of surface commotion. Of course, there are many factory options on the market including octopus skirts, squids, birdie teasers and the like that can be made into any sort of concoction that you might dream up and most would rig these with wire to save losing the lot on the first attack from a toothy mack.

Williamson produce top quality game gear suitable for the northern region and a quick visit to the website www.williamsonlures.com will get you started. There's premade daisy chains on spreader bars, feather lures with bullet heads, teasers, trolling lures and skirts, lipless lures and metal lures to choose from and yes you will find a great selection of this gear at Got One.

As well as this, we also produce our own versions of mackie and beakie trolling skirts ready for rigging a fresh garfish, complete with instructions. Anyway, we will never never know if the sails are still around if you never never go, so....get out there and let me know!

In other reports, Saturday didn't turn out to be the happiest day for Saint Kilda fans but I know of one that finished up with a smile following a session at Emery Point. Madison Devlin was stoked with a good sized trevally and then a mackerel only seconds after the AFL Grand Final siren.

In and about the harbour has been quite productive, Hudson Creek producing goldies for tea and the upper Pioneer Creek rockbars returning salmon and even a few barra on the neap tides. That Stiffy Gold Nugget Twitch Bait is again guilty of unfair play, fooling fish all over the shop...from Pioneer Creek to Hope Inlet!

Landbased anglers that have timed it right at East Point were rewarded with queenfish and trevally to about 4kg. The trick is to dodge the wind and that normally means getting there early.
To our West, Bynoe Harbour rocked the boat for Chris Powick who took visiting family in search of a barramundi. Chris said the small 14A Gold transparent Bomber was the hot lure and eventually lost every one he had to 75cm+ fish. With an estimated 30 barra hauled aboard and then released, you'd have to say it was a great two day family experience!

Righto, now what's happened to Corroboree? I'd say possibly a combination of things: fishing pressure, rain and wind. The popular billabong has certainly lacked in the performance stakes of late with many teams fishing the SWB Challenge finding it extremely hard to find a fish. There have been signs of a few local showers in the area, which could have contributed; the other thorn in the side is the wind. Feedback has revealed boats are finding it hard to troll in a straight line and lines are getting crossed up with the boat at better than a 45 degree troll stance! I dont know about you, but I certainly don't have much luck when its windy.

It's back on to a building phase this week which is one of my preferred tides. You get good water clarity with a bit of run for a bit of fun. Early in the week you might spot me at Saltwater Arm, if not Saturday's low of 1.71 metres at midday is all too tempting for a barra up East Arm. Just like you mob, I've always got a backup plan.

Good luck on the water.
