Report - Feb 12

12 Feb 2010

Some hot and sticky weather mixed up with some solid wind on the weekend has slowed anglers a little over the past week, but right on cue the bluefin tuna have made an appearance down to the west and it seems that we are not far off another thumper of a tuna season!

Pakula Big Game Night

Port Phillip Bay

Mordialloc pier is still producing good numbers of garfish. The best baits have been silverfish, peeled prawns and maggots. The key to catching a good bag is to berley with a ground premixed pilchard mulie berley. Small sharp hooks #12 or #14 are essential. Best times have been late afternoon or early morning.

Beaumaris pier has been fishing well for garfish. The best baits have been silverfish, and peeled prawns. The afternoons have been the best time and it would be worth fishing for the whiting as well.

A couple of customers have been in this week and reported good captures of whiting off the beach at Parkdale of an evening. The best baits have been pippies and mussels. They also said that there are a few nice pinkies taken right on dark around the 35cm mark.

Down off Frankston through to Canadian bay the squid have going good early morning and late afternoon. Good mate and customer Jason hit the water early Wednesday morning and caught his bag of squid on Harimitsu 2.5 in colour EWC. Some of the squid were up around the kilo mark.

Eren and good mate Bashir fished down at Rosebud on Monday night for some whiting shore based. The boys had a great time catching 25 whiting on prawns and tubeworms. They had such a great session they backed it up the following night catching another 20 odd whiting. Eren says all the whiting have been full of worms.

Eren and good mate Anton headed down to Portsea on Thursday for some gummies and squid. They ended up with a good bag of squid all taken on Harimitsu 2.5 in EWC, BC and BG. The boys tried for some salmon using the new Pakula Mico Uzi but ended up with 'couta instead.

Western Port

Gawaine from Think Big charters has had some great results on the gummies this week. They have done four trips and have caught and released 10 gummies all between 14-25 kg. He also reports that there is a big school of salmon from Cowes to Buoy 5 which are making great fresh bait for the gummies.

Middle Yarra River

The Yarra River mid section around Warrandyte has been fishing well over the last week. Macquarie Perch have been in good numbers and will come to a scrub worm very easily. Also some cod have been taken by the select few that are willing to put in the casts. Fishing spinnerbaits has proven the most successful.

Out Of Town

Portland

The tuna are here! Good mate Mick from Aussie Angler and some mates headed down to Portland on Sunday. The boys headed out to the horseshoe but didn’t see any action so they headed west from the horseshoe. They ended up with a five-way hook up but lost three and landed two bluefin tuna of 35 and 41kgs.
Good Customer Jason headed to Portland for a fish on Monday, he and his crew caught several bluefin in the 25-30kg range, well done guys!

There have been several other reports through the week with anglers finding fish out on the 1000m area west of Portland and Port MacDonnell.

Bermagui

Scott from Bridge Motors reports that there is a really good bite of dolphinfish at the moment. With all the rain they received last week it opened most estuaries with plenty of debris heading out in the ocean making great fads for the dolphinfish. The average size is 8-10kgs. The marlin bite should fire up again with better water making its way down the coast over the next week

Narooma

Good mate and guide Stuart Hindson of Aussie Fish Estuary Adventures reports the fishing is firing up at Wagonga Inlet with one session this week producing a bunch of flathead with the best ones going 65, 79, 80 and 82cm, along with 40cm whiting and a bunch of good bream. All of the fish were taken on a range of plastics and hard body lures. If you want to get into some great south coast fishing contact Stuart through his website www.ausfishing.com.au.

Norfolk Island

You may have read the reports that came through from Lee while he was filming at Norfolk Island last week for the next series of Adventure Bound. The boys ended up with a bunch of kingfish to 35lb on jigs as well as silver trevally to 19lb and sweetlip to 15lb on Yabai Jigs. You will see all the action on Adventure Bound this season.
