Squidgy Southern Bream Series - Round 1
12 Feb 2010Well what can I say? When we started writing up the entry forms for the first round of the Squidgy Southern Bream Series I imagined a field of around 40 teams turning up on the day to fight it out - how wrong of me to think this. We passed 40 teams buy 6:20am and buy briefing the field had grown to 84 teams which consisted of 64 boat teams and 20 kayak teams a far cry from the 40 all up I'd thought about many months prior.
The weather at the start of the day didn’t look too promising, but that didn’t deter anyone. 7am came and the field of 84 teams were away to hopefully do battle with some of the monster Georges River bream that had been showing up in the week's pre-fishing.

For those of you that don’t understand the goings on in these competitions, all teams get an allotted time period - usually 7am to 2pm - in which boat-based teams need to target a five bream bag total (three bream for kayak based entrants).
On this day things couldn’t have been better with around 74 teams out of the 84 weighing in.
With some of Australia’s top bream teams battling it out in the Georges River it didn’t take long to see that Sydney still had some big fish. There was a tie for biggest bream between teams On Again and BIG at 1.26kg. Accordingly, the bags weren't small either with team On again, consisting of Neil Kelly and Andrew Hansler, weighing in Mallacoota-like bag of bream of 5.16kg. They were closely followed by team Culburra Bait And Tackle with a bag of bream that they thought would put them in the top position at 4.755kg - not quite!

The winning team was using the Jackal Chubby on the flats and the 2nd place team put their bag down to Gladiator Smash baits in 7cm and 9cm in green.
Some of the local guys said these were probably the biggest bags to come out of the Georges River in the years these comps have been running, so fingers crossed it'll happen again in a few weeks when the series moves south to the Clyde River at Batemans bay.
