Australian bass and estuaru perch may not be taken in NSW between May 1 and August 31 (image: B. Fallon).

NSW DPI Fisheries has issued a reminder that the annual zero bag limit Australian bass and estuary perch spawning closure started on May 1 and carries through until August 31, 2019 (inclusive).

The closure provides protection for these hard hitting native sportfish, which travel from freshwater to estuaries to breed. The zero bag limit does not affect anglers fishing for Australian bass and estuary perch in freshwater lakes or rivers above dams.

These species caught during this period must be returned to the water immediately with the least possible harm.
