Dangerous fishing conditions on NSW coast

THE Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) is warning of dangerous surf conditions to affect the NSW coast this Easter.

A slow moving low pressure system near New Zealand will move towards Australia and is expected to create dangerous conditions from late on Friday.

Swells of up to three metres, 15-17 seconds apart, plus seas of up to four metres will combine to create large and powerful surf conditions hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing.

Check your local conditions before planning a fishing trip by going to BOM district forecasts at http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/forecasts/map.shtml Also check out the links and safety advice on BOM’s dedicated rock-fishing weather page.

The Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW offers these safety tips:

  • Choose a safe spot
  • Don’t fish alone
  • Wear non-slip shoes
  • Wear a life jacket
  • Never turn your back on the sea

Don’t put your life on the line. If it looks dangerous find a safer place or go home.

Safe fishing!
