Devil of a trip from Sydney to Coffs

WHILE many fishos might daydream about jumping aboard their boat and heading up the coast, not too many drive from Sydney to Coffs Harbour, in a day…

Good friends Mike Bonnici and Joe Highway did just that recently, aboard Mike’s new Sea Devil 620 (21-foot), a feature boat in Fishing World’s summer-long issue.

The pair launched at 3.30am from Bayview in Sydney’s north with a plan to drive up to Coffs, fishing along the way.

“We fished at Ports Stephens, Forster, Seal Rocks and South West Rocks,” Bonnici told Fisho.

“We fished mainly for kings,” he said.

The fishing proved highly fruitful too, judging by this king featured below…

Of the decision to make the trip, Bonnici says it was just something he’d always wanted to do. When he mentioned it to BRP Australia’s Riley Tolmay, the idea of using the voyage to gather valuable fuel usage data from the boat’s Evinrude E-TEC G2 was hatched.

After launching in Sydney and fishing for 4-5 hours along the way the pair easily made it the 443.8kms to Coffs Harbour in 11 hours at an average speed of 45km/h (24.3 knots).

Impressively, the new 250hp G2 Evinrude E-TEC used just over 305.4 litres of fuel for the trip.

Bonnici has now clocked up 110 hours on his new outboard.
