It has been alleged that on one case, a cotton irrigator took more than a billion more litres of water than he was allowed (image: Martin Auldist).

A FOUR Corners investigation has alleged that certain irrigators have stolen huge amounts of water from the Murray-Darling Basin, and that a senior Government official shared inside information with irrigation lobbyists to help them lobby against the Murray Darling Basin Plan. In one case, they say, a cotton farmer took around a billion litres more than he was allowed. Obviously this is highly relevant to anglers because the regulation of almost all of the Basin’s rivers to provide water for irrigation and other purposes has greatly affected native fish populations.  If you missed the Four Corners report, you can catch a 3-minute summary at the link below.
