Huge jewfish caught in Shoalhaven River

A MASSIVE 47.5kg jewfish – that’s 104.5lbs in the old scale – was caught in the Shoalhaven River on the NSW South Coast on Sunday.

Keen angler Vaughan Little, from Culburra Beach, hooked the beast jewie on a 100mm black and gold Squidgy Fish. Scotty Sharpe, owner of Culburra Bait & Tackle, weighed the fish on a set of calibrated scales.

As with most jewie captures, this fish was the result of serious effort and dedication.

“Vaughan’s been spending hours in the shop talking about getting little ones and he goes and cracks this mammoth,” Scotty told Fisho. “It’s awesome!”

Recent rains had discoloured the water in the lower Shoalhaven and big tides created ideal jewie conditions. Fisho had heard rumours of a similar fish being taken off a nearby beach – a school of mega mulloway are obviously hanging around the area.

Congratulations to Vaughan on the fish of a lifetime. The jewie is currently in the freezer at Culburra Bait & Tackle waiting to be moulded and hung on Vaughan’s wall!
