This Murray cod was one of nearly 300 native fish recently relocated from irrigation channels into safer waters.

NEARLY 300 native fish have new homes following a successful electro-fishing and relocation exercise over the last fortnight.

A total of 182 Murray cod and 115 golden perch have been moved to Broken Creek at Nathalia, Benalla Lake, Lake Victoria and the Goulburn River at Shepparton.

The Murray cod ranged from 4 cm to over a metre, and the golden perch from 25 cm to nearly 60 cm.

Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) carry out regular channel maintenance in the irrigation ‘off-season’. This includes lowering the water to rid channels of weeds. During this process the fish that have found their way into the channels become vulnerable, so the Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) have teamed up with GMW to catch and relocate these natives.

The VFA would like to thank everyone who helped out, including the GMW team, Goulburn Broken CMA, Nathalia Angling Club, Tatong Anglers Group, Trelly’s Fishing World, Suzanna Sheed MP and all the fantastic school kids that lent a hand!

What's your reaction?
