Jumbo South Oz king!

MATT Forrest is certainly no stranger to targeting big samsons and kingfish on light line here in South Oz, but this time he’s even surprised himself by landing a stonking 168cm yellowtail kingfish in his home waters of Port Lincoln.

An active member of the Adelaide Game Fishing Club, Matt was live baiting over a local reef system with another mate out of Matt’s 5.6m Haines Hunter Jolly Roger II. A double hook-up had resulted in a kingfish around 20kg being landed without too much fuss, but when Matt’s fish slugged it out down deep for over 45 minutes he began questioning what had eaten his live squid.

Fishing 15kg mono, eventually the mammoth king surfaced. After the fish was measured at 168cm total length and had bottomed out 50kg Salter scales (cradled in a sling), Matt made the call to release it rather than pursue the all-tackle Australian record.

I’ve fished with Matt before and know his dedication and attention to detail – and this fish was certainly no fluke. He spends more time on the water than most, and puts in long hours to achieve success.

Well done Matt on a mammoth achievement!
