Mercury Marine's unique Big Tiller can now be used with a large range of Mercury outboard products.
Created specifically for Mercury and Mariner outboard engines, the Big Tiller now adapts to:
* 40 to 115hp four-strokes,
* 75 to 250hp OptiMax engines, and
* 135 to 200hp four-cylinder Verado engines with SmartCraft Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS).
The tiller handle angle, throttle handle and valve tension can all be easily modified via easy-to-use adjustment knobs.
The ergonomically-friendly tiller is centre-mounted for optimum control, and the proximity of the shift arm to the throttle end of the tiller makes it so easy to operate, according to Mercury. The power trim switch is also right under your thumb.
As well, the throttle is more natural to use as it rotates through 110 degrees, not the more cumbersome 120 degrees to 180 degrees, which is the industry norm.
The friction on the tiller arm pivot and throttle can be adjusted simply, and the tiller arm can be lifted and locked into five positions for fishing convenience and security on a trailer.
Optional power steering is also available on all of the OptiMax engines which utilise mechanical steering, while DTS power steering is available on all four-cylinder Verado outboards and OptiMax engines with DTS. The steering system uses common Verado parts and allows for adjustable steering pressure with the touch of a finger. Mercury said there's zero engine feedback through the tiller arm.
A number of other options are also available; including external trim switches such as foot trims and a push-button RPM adjuster can provide even better control and manoeuvrability.
The Haines Hunter 525 Prowler offers all the benefits of an open boat design with the ride quality of a much bigger vessel. JIM HARNWELL reports.
