More men caught with setlines

DESPITE a recent post highlighting illegal set lining in the Murrumbidgee River, NSW DPI Fisheries officers recently caught another four men using large numbers of set lines.

In one incident, two men were caught on the Macintyre River, upstream of Mungindi, using 23 set lines. The men were found in possession of two golden perch and two Murray cod taken from the illegally set lines. One of the Murray cod, which measured 90 cm, was found tethered near the men’s camp.

In a separate incident, two men were apprehended on the Mehi River, near Moree, using 20 set lines and in possession of one 44 cm Murray Cod.

All 43 lines were seized, along with the golden perch and Murray cod. The 90 cm cod that was tethered was successfully released alive. The other fish were destroyed.

The four men face large fines, including possessing prohibited size fish, for their illegal fishing activities.

Fishers are reminded that the size limit for Murray cod is 55 cm to 75 cm and fishers can use up to two lines each.
