No Nets campaign launched in NSW

REC fishing advocacy group Keep Australia Fishing (KAF) has today launched a new online campaign to have commercial nets removed from Sydney’s Hawkesbury River.

For the launch, Keep Australia Fishing says it erected an underwater billboard with the message “No Nets” (see right) which was recently sounded in the Hawkesbury and discovered by the keen eye of a local angler.

In the lead-up to this weekend’s state election, the campaign is also pushing for NSW Premier Mike Baird and Opposition Leader Luke Foley to turn Sydney Harbour into recreational fishing haven.

The Keep Australia Fishing campaign states:

“The historic Hawkesbury River is also under threat from too many commercial nets. The Government’s own reports conclude there are too many commercial netters but the Government still has not acted to reduce their numbers. See http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/commercial/reform/review

“The solution to both these problems is to make both Sydney Harbour and the Hawkesbury river recreational fishing havens, that will allow recreational fishers and the community enjoy these unique locations into the future.”
