ANGLERS are reminded that the June long weekend is their last opportunity to catch a trout in streams and rivers across Victoria and NSW as the traditional fishing season closes in these waters over the winter months.
The annual closure will start on Tuesday 12 June and re-opens in September in Victoria and at the start of the long weekend in October in NSW. This closure allows trout to breed uninterrupted during their annual spawning period.
Anglers can continue fishing for trout during the annual closure, without breaking the rules, at most lakes and impoundments, many of which have been stocked by Government authorities.
In Victoria, winter trout anglers often head for lakes like Dartmouth, Eildon, Purrumbete, and Bullen Merri. In New South Wales, popular winter fishing spots include Lakes Jindabyne and Eucumbene, Oberon Dam near Bathurst, Tantangara and Talbingo Dams near Tumut and Lake Wallace and Thompson’s Creek Dam near Lithgow.
Fishers who do head to one of the trout lakes and dams this winter, in either state, are reminded that they are still required to have a current recreational fishing licence on them at all times while fishing.
