A NEW research project by NSW DPI Fisheries will investigate the objectives of recreational fishers who target key species in NSW.

NSW DPI says, while most anglers and spearfishers know what makes a great fishing trip for them, it can be tough to work out what’s best for everyone across the entire fishery.

As well we all know, there are many reasons to go fishing. You may want to catch fresh fish for a tasty meal, head out specifically to target trophy species or just enjoy getting out into the great outdoors with family or friends.

As harvest strategies are developed in NSW, a clear set of objectives for the recreational fishing sector – and other sectors – will be needed to ensure the fisheries perform for all stakeholders.

The recreational fishing project will include a series of workshops involving a diverse team of experienced recreational fishers who have volunteered their time to help develop a set of objectives for specific species.

An online survey will also be used to capture the views of the broader recreational fishing community. Objectives will then be prioritised using a standard method for identifying preferences in survey data.

The research is funded by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust.
