Pre-election meeting to discuss future of fishing

Many fishos around the country are concerned the upcoming election may lead to more marine closures – depending on who forms government after August 21.

In justifying its push for more marine parks, the leader of the Greens Senator Bob Brown,  said on Channel Nine on August 1, “We have lost ninety per cent of the great fishes, including marlin and tuna and snapper … for goodness sake”. Such comments have led to concern among anglers that the outcome of the election will see the Greens hold the balance of power in the Senate, which will ultimately see fishos locked out of more areas around the coastline.

A meeting to discuss these issues has been set down for this Saturday August 14 on the NSW Central Coast. The public forum will be held at 11.00am the Newcastle and Port Stephens Gamefish Club. In attendance will be Senator Ron Boswell from the National Party; also invited to speak are Bob Baldwin MP for Paterson and Labor candidate for Paterson, Jim Arneman.
