LOCAL communities are being asked for input on the design and location for a new artificial reef off South Australia’s coastline.
The reef project is part of the SA Government’s $3.25 million support package – announced at the last State Election – to boost recreational fishing and tourism opportunities in areas possibly affected by new marine parks.
Sustainability, Environment and Conservation Minister Ian Hunter said the new reef presented an exciting prospect for recreational anglers.
“This is an opportunity to enhance habitat for recreationally-important fish species and provide new fishing experiences, as well as improve the health and diversity of our unique marine environment,” he said.
“If this reef proves successful, it will help with future decisions on fish habitat enhancement, which has the potential to provide a real boost to local communities.
“We will be looking to the public to assist us in deciding the most appropriate design and location for the reef, bringing in the most up-to-date scientific knowledge to help assess and determine the best solution.”
The artificial reef trial is being led by PIRSA, with a working group with representatives from environment, planning and tourism departments along with RecFish SA.
The community forum will discuss a range of artificial reef options and their benefits, with presentations by Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA), the Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR), Fisheries Victoria and RecFish SA. All members of the public are welcome.
The forum will be held at the Adelaide Sailing Club on Wednesday, 6 May at 7pm.
