Record samson caught in SA

MATT Forrest from Port Lincoln in South Australia has recently lodged a 15kg line class Australian Record claim for samson fish.

Matt caught the 33.90kg fish on July 25, 2014 while fishing solo from his 5.6m Haines Hunter Jolly Roger II. The big samson, which measured 138cm in length, took 35 minutes to land and was caught on live squid.

Several months ago Matt claimed the Australian record 10kg line class with a 32kg samson fish, so he’s no stranger to light line game fishing. Interestingly, Matt tried to release the 33.9kg fish but when it didn’t release well he dropped it on the scales and realised it would be a potential Australian record for that line class.

I met with Matt back on land and witnessed the weighing of the fish. It was an absolute brute of a fish; not long in length but a very deep bodied samson.

Matt is a member of the Adelaide Game Fishing Club.
