THE invasive redfin perch may now be in Thomspons Creek Dam, according to an article published by the NSW Council of Freshwater Anglers.

Ray Tang, president of Wallerawang Branch of Central Acclimatisation Society (WCAS), reported that a redfin was caught from Thompsons Creek Dam in February by an angler using a spinner from the south eastern bank.

Tang told the NSW Council of Freshwater Anglers he has spoken with senior fisheries manager Cameron Westaway regarding a way forward.

Westaway said that once redfin were present there were no eradication methods available and the growing out of larger trout is the only way to maintain a quality trout fishery in waters containing redfin. This is the case for all redfin impoundments and NSW DPI is investing in the hatchery infrastructure required to produce larger trout.

If you catch a redfin perch in Thompsons Creek Dam, please notify NSW DPI.
