Super trawler debate aired on Landline

THERE has been another public backlash following recent reports the 95m foreign owned supertrawler Geelong Star could soon be given access to Australian waters by the federal Government.

The Geelong Star’s quota has reportedly been set at 16,566 tonnes for jack mackerel, redbait and blue mackerel for the 2014-15 fishing season.

Despite much public opposition two years ago to its super trawler, Seafish Tasmania is now set to bring bring the smaller factory ship to Australia.

The ABD reports that the controversial company have already been through most levels of the approvals process required by Australian Fisheries Management.

Fiona Breen recently reported on the ABC’s Landline that the Geelong Star will be fishing for red bait, blue bait, jack mackerel and sardines as soon as it arrives from Europe.
