Trip Report: Arnhemland Barramundi Nature Lodge

RECENTLY, Mitch Bailey, his son Oscar and mates Andre and Sam visited the NT’s Arnhemland Barramundi Nature Lodge and caught a swag of fish. Here’s what they had to say about their visit, courtesy of the latest ABNL newsletter.

“We spent four days at the Lodge, two days fishing for barra and two days chasing bluewater fish. The barra fishing was great, Andre caught his first ever barra plus some. In addition to a cricket-score barra catch, we caught blue salmon, mangrove jack, golden snapper and big queenies in the creek, it was great fun.

Andre Eavis had fun jigging on the bluewater and caught some hard fighting species including coral trout.

The first day out on the blue water we had a great day casting lures to massive schools of longtail tuna that were busting up bait shoals all around the boat. We topped that day off with a wild session on big queenfish”.

“On the last day we wanted to target Spanish mackerel, within 20 minutes of leaving the ramp we had two lures in the water and seconds later a double hookup on big macks!

“It was seriously exciting fishing with mackerel darting every where. Each time a lure hit the water it was devoured in seconds. Some of the macks we hooked were being chased by big whaler sharks. We even hooked a big shark. That kept us busy for a while.”

After everyone had caught enough mackerel we switched tactics and jigged for reef fish and caught some nice coral trout and Sam landed a monster brown sweetlip on light spin gear, which was a great effort. The action was non stop. To finish the day off we cast surface poppers for a mad session on big queenfish it was an unbelievable day!”
