VIDEO: Barotrauma in golden snapper

ACCORDING to fisheries research, golden snapper (fingermark) and other reef fish caught and released in water deeper than 10 metres are unlikely to survive due to the effects of barotrauma.

In this video from NT Fisheries, the effects of barotrauma on caught and released golden snapper are clearly demonstrated.

The filming cage in the video is used to show the immediate effects of barotrauma on fish that have been returned to the depth at which they were captured. The fish were caught using conventional tackle to simulate how they would be taken by the average recreational angler.
