VIDEO: Rescuing fire-affected Macquarie perch

CRITICALLY endangered native fish have been rescued from their fire-affected habitat in the Buffalo River in north east Victoria.

A significant population of Macquarie perch has been relocated from the river at Abbeyard and taken to the Victorian Fisheries Authority’s Snobs Creek Hatchery to recover.

Post fire rain events wash ash, sediment and other debris in the river system, seriously threatening the survival of the fish.

The fish will be returned to their natural habitat once the water quality has recovered.
