Yak fishers drown in Port Phillip Bay

VICTORIAN police say two kayak fishers whose bodies were found in Port Phillip Bay yesterday were inexperienced when it came to using their watercraft.

The men, a 40-year-old from Ardeer and a 36-year-old from Windsor, were reported missing when they failed to return to Sandringham Yacht Club.

The bodies were located yesterday morning, one in the mouth of Patterson River, the second in Seaford.

Two motorised kayaks were also found, washed up at Seaford.

Inspector Tim Hansen, from Moorabbin Police, said the men had gone on a fishing trip.

"At this stage our inquiries reveal both men were wearing lifejackets, so this just appears to be a real tragedy," he told radio 3AW.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said conditions on Port Phillip Bay would have been "rough" at the time due to strong northerly winds of up to 50km/h.
