THE NSW South Coast is rewarding keen anglers on the hunt to catch barrel-size yellowfin tuna, despite very short windows of “good” weather suitable to head wide offshore.

Last week, Fishing World contributor Michael “Gibbo” Gibson had a day to remember, catching his first yellowfin tuna “off the top” on a stickbait, fishing wide off Ulladulla in his Bar Crusher 615C “Kurupt”.

“It was an incredible sight to see my Halco stickbait get inhaled off the surface after quite a few dry runs chasing the yellowfin tuna this year. This was my first proper fish for the boat and my first yellowfin tuna off the top, so to see it finally on the floor of the boat after a 50 minute fight was an awesome experience. I was blown away by the hurt I could put on the fish with a 20000 Shimano Saragosa and Terez rod combo. Not long after the first fish was landed, we had a second hooked up to top off a cracking day wide off Ulladulla.”
