ABU Garcia unveiled it Veritas 3.0 and updated Revo ALX spin reel range during last year’s AFTA trade show.
Shortly afterwards I received a review combo, which included the VRT3.5 702L and ALX 2000SH, and have been using it extensively ever since.
The rod is 7 foot long, rated to 2-4kg and capable of throwing lures from 2-10 grams. These specs instantly spell out a great light estuary rod for bream, flathead, whiting, and in the fresh, bass and trout. Since September it’s been my go-to rod for these species and so much more. During last year’s Gold Coast Flathead Classic it worked a treat landing plenty of nice point scoring flatties. Back home in Sydney, the Veritas has proved its worth capturing any number of rat kings, salmon, bonito, tailor, bream and flathead. I’ve also caught a bunch of Hawkesbury bass and some fat Windamere yellow belly.
I love versatile tackle and the Veritas rod is a great estuary “all rounder”.
This is Abu Garcia’s third generation Veritas. The blanks are fitted with Fuji components, including KR guides with Alconite inserts and lightweight graphite Fuji reel seats. Fuji KL guides with Alconite inserts are featured on the light jigging models.
The rods also feature a hyper tactile Ultralon EVA grip system for, according to Abu Garcia, improved ergonomics and overall sensitivity.
The rod is light in the hand and features quite a sensitive tip. It’s an ideal rod for working bladed, vibes and small hardbodies. The sensitive tip works a treat, yet there’s plenty of grunt down low to subdue stubborn fish.
The Revo ALX 2000SH spin reel is the perfect match for the veritas 3.0. The ALX range sits below Abu Garcia’s premium MGX reel. The ALX features a bunch of impressive specs which make this one of the best value spin reels around.
Abu Garcia has include its newly developed Salt Shield bearing for added water repelling and corrosion resistance. It has 7 steel HPCR bearings, plus 1 roller bearing to create a very smooth reel.
The Carbon Matrix drag hasn’t missed a beat and the Rocket Spool Lip Design, which allows better line control, means very few tangles. I’ve bouncing the new orange Berkley Fireline in 6lb, which works well and complements the Abu combo nicely.
While specialist rods and reels have their place, the “all-rounder” is a great option for the average fisho who enjoys a cross-over of species and locations. The Veritas 3.0 and Revo ALX 2000SH is one such combo and well worth checking out.
