REVIEW: Schneider Crystal Clear 100% Fluorocarbon leader

OVER the past few months I’ve been using Schneider’s new Crystal Clear 100% Fluorocarbon Leader. Schneider says it’s made from the highest grade of PVDF, which is a specialty plastic material in the fluoropolymer family. One of the main reasons why fluorocarbon leader is believed to be better than nylon leader is the difference between the ‘refractive index’ of the two materials. Basically, light passes through fluorocarbon at a similar speed to that of water – according to the refractive index. Nylon has a higher refractive index; meaning that light takes longer to pass through it compared to fluorocarbon and water. Therefore, fluorocarbon is theoretically the less visible material when immersed in water.

But, all science aside, Schneider’s latest fluorocarbon leader which, so far, I have used in the 10lb class has performed without fault on small kingfish, salmon, tailor, frigates, jewfish, flathead, bream and bass using a range of different lures and techniques. As a testament to it’s abrasion resistance, I recall one recent session in Sydney Harbour where I caught upwards of 15 kingfish and salmon to 65cm on the one length of 10lb leader in a frenzied pelagic surface bite!

Despite the leader’s toughness, this Schneider fluorocarbon leader is fairly supple and feels really silky in the hand, but still remains much harder than nylon monofilament. When connecting the braid mainline to the fluorocarbon leader via an FG knot, the braid ‘bites’ into the leader very well and doesn’t slip, which can occur when tying the FG knot with some of the ultra hard fluorocarbon lines on the market. The 10lb also comes in 100m spools, which means you’ll get a lot of fishing in before having to buy another spool. Overall, I think Schneider has hit the nail on the head with this leader and it’s right up there with some of the more expensive Japanese fluorocarbon leader available, and at a fraction of their cost. It’s great stuff!
