Yahoo, wahoo!

Stuart Thompson, a kayak angler who recently made headlines for his miraculous head-on collision with a flybridge cruiser, (read story here) has made news again after the miraculous landing of a 25kg wahoo on board a Hobie near the Gold Coast.

Although wahoo are a regular capture for south-east Queensland and Northern NSW powerboaters at this time of year, only a small handful of Australian 'yak fishers have hooked up, let alone landed these stunning oceanic speedsters.

Thompson was live baiting for around two hours in perfect offshore conditions when the first bait was taken. This unfortuantely resulted in a missed strike, but was immediately followed by another tentative grab on the next deployed yellowtail. In a blink Thompson's T-curve rod doubled over as the fish made a screaming run that easily stripped 200 metres of 50lb braid off his reel. During that first run, onlookers on other vessels recounted Thompson being the beneficiary of a 10-12km/h "sleigh ride" that continued for a few hundred metres before the fish settled down to slug it out from the deep.

In less than seven minutes, 163cm of electric blue mayhem was subdued at the side of the 'yak and Thompson landed what is possibly Australia's largest kayak caught wahoo.

From a close call with death only weeks ago to an Australian kayak fishing milestone, Stuart Thompson has had one incredibly memorable and miraculous March.
