A DOLPHINFISH tagged and released from a fish aggregating device (FAD) east of Port Hacking – as part of the NSW DPI Game Fish Tagging Program – has been recaptured from another FAD 70 nautical miles further south.

Sydney angler Gianni Lo Guidice originally tagged the “dolly” on 13 March 2020 while fishing near the Port Hacking FAD. The juvenile fish measured at 71cm (about 2.5kg in weight) before being tagged and released.

The fish was then recaptured 35 days later on the Jervis Bay FAD by angler Hugh Harrison. On recapture, the fish measured 83cm (and about 4kg in weight), highlighting the explosive growth rate of this species.

NSW DPI says, studies have shown that dolphinfish are one of the fastest growing fish in the ocean. They can reach 1kg after six months and up to 10kg within a single year.
