Police slam travelling fishos in NSW

REPORTS of Sydney fishos planning trips to coastal communities have been slammed as selfish and irresponsible by authorities.

Authorities have warned fishos must stay local and avoid travel if they intend to fish or go boating during the COVID-19 restrictions.

NSW fishos have been thrown a lifeline to continue their pastime during these unprecedented times, although irresponsible behaviour by a few will result in total fishing bans.

Rural Crime – NSW Police Force said while brief fishing trips from home are considered exercise (within the two-person limit), fishing and camping holidays are not.

“The inclusion of fishing, hunting and golf as an allowable recreation is about people who can access that activity locally,” said NSW Police on a Facebook post.

“You cannot use fishing, hunting or golf as an excuse to travel on a holiday or to your usual retreat in country NSW.”

Transport for NSW told Fishing World it is supporting current NSW Government advice by encouraging boaters to practise social distancing and stay at home wherever possible to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

“The NSW Government has also advised that all non-essential travel to regional areas and remote communities must be cancelled,” said a spokesperson for Transport NSW.

“Unless you have an essential need to be out – stay ashore. Packing up your boat for a road trip and a half day fishing expedition, for example, is not in the spirit of the restrictions.

“Boaters who need to be out on the water are advised to use common sense, and remember to follow social rules at all times. They are encouraged to stay within local waters as much as possible. Boaters should only be on their boat alone, or with no more than one other person; or with family who ordinarily live in the same household.

“NSW Maritime and NSW Police Marine Area Command staff remain out on the water to ensure the safety of essential and commercial waterway users,” said the spokesperson.

As the situation is rapidly changing, Transport for NSW encourages all boaters to check the NSW Government website.
