FISHERIES Queensland says conditions have been spot-on over the last few months for its scientists to monitor mackerel species in South East Queensland.

Fisheries Queensland has been working at popular access points to survey fishers and their mackerel catches, as well as collecting mackerel frames from its Keen Angler Program participants.

Research has revealed mackerels are fast-growing fish with spotted mackerel reaching the minimum legal size of 60 cm when they are 1-2 years old and can live as long as 8-10 years.
