Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW: Stakeholders ignored in Southern Fish Trawl plans

THE Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW (RFA) has been active during the federal election, discussing the issues surrounding the Southern Fish Trawl off NSW.

In stark contrast to the way the NSW government and the federal government have previously ignored recreational and commercial fishers when they planned to shuffle the management of the NSW trawl fishery south of Sydney over to the Commonwealth, a few genuine assurances have been presented to the RFA of NSW and the recreational and commercial fishers of the federal electorates of Gilmore and Eden-Monaro by those contesting the upcoming election.

NSW South Coast sitting Members of Parliament Kirsty McBain (Labor Member Eden-Monaro) and Fiona Phillips (Labor Member Gilmore) are both supporting that any changes that will impact the local marine environment and fishers should be based on scientific assessment and in thorough consultation with the community, including the Southern Fish Trawl planned transition.

Others candidates in those South Coast seats including the United Australia Party and The Greens all share similar views.

No such assurances have been received from the Liberals.

This planned transition of the Southern Fish Trawl has had the Recreational Fishing Alliance concerned for many years, especially knowing the commonwealth’s already failed management of other fisheries.
