Still no action on mulloway in NSW

LAST year a Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC) stock status report re-classified mulloway from “overfished” to “depleted” in NSW.

Despite past changes designed to reduce fishing mortality on both adult and juvenile parts of the stock, the FRDC report stated that “measurable improvements are yet to be detected”.

Following the updated stock status report, vision and images of beach hauling of mature fish on the NSW North Coast began circulating on social media. A video Fishing World published on Facebook has since gone viral, ticking up 10 million views and raising plenty of concern for the future of the species.

Meanwhile, a recent article Mulloway in crisis by Fishing World writer Dave Rae has revealed how years of poor management in NSW has left stocks in a state of decay.

Now well into 2022, with still no action on mulloway, recreational anglers are beginning to question if the NSW DPI and incumbent NSW fisheries minister Dugald Saunders value the concerns of anglers and this highly-prized sportfish.

More to come.
