THERE’S never been so many good quality, affordable rods on the market than there is right now. Estuary and inshore anglers are often spoilt for choice. But even with so many decent rods out there, you still know when you pick up a “good stick”.

Recently, I’ve been on the hunt for a fast-actioned, 7-feet plus flattie rod with enough power down below to throw big unweighted plastics and mid-size glidebaits on the flats. There’s plenty of baitcaster “swimbait” rods designed for largemouth bass and Murray cod that suit these specs, but they’re often too cumbersome and broomstick-like to feel the bite, react and set the hooks on a big lizard.

One rod that I thought might fit the bill was the new Shimano 2020 Zodias 175HA – a 7’5″ medium/heavy baitcaster rod rated for 12-25lb line and a lure rating of 12-42 grams. After I picked this rod up, I knew it was going to be a winner!

The 2020 Zodias 175HA has a fast, responsive action with a medium taper and enough forgiveness to lob big lures, set the hooks and handle the head shakes of a trophy lizard.

The extra length delivers good casting distance and Shimano’s Hi-Power X Blank construction is lightweight and powerful.

This rod (and the 2020 Zodias range) does away with a soft EVA rod butt and features a solid carbon “monocoque” butt which offers better sensitivity and offers a bit more control and precision when casting.

The Zodias 175HA is finished off with Fuji K Alconite quides and a Fuji SiC (silicon carbide) tip.

The 2020 Zodias 175HA blends a unique mix of rod characteristics that has been hard to find. I’ve been using it with a Shimano Chronarch G baitcaster and the outfit has fast become my preferred big lure combo when chasing crocs in shallow water!
